Otley Walking Festival
June 22nd to June 30th 2019
Meet Chris, Lower Wharfedale Ramblers, at the main gate, All Saints Church, Kirkgate, Otley. Depart 10am. Involves some bus travel. Sorry, no dogs allowed.
Despite the name, this walk is not just for railway enthusiasts. In fact, the tunnel is 2 miles long and the walk is 8 miles. Our circular walk will take us through field and woodland, via Bramhope Moor, Breary, Bank Top and Bramhope Woods.
At All Saints Church we’ll visit the memorial to the 23 men killed building the Bramhope Tunnel. The memorial, recently restored, is a scale model of the spectacular North Portal, which we will see on the walk.
From Otley we catch a bus to Bramhope village and begin our walk. The first few miles follow the route of the tunnel using spoil heaps and ventilation shafts after our guide. Thereafter, it is beautiful countryside until we reach the North Portal in Bramhope Woods, virtually at the end of our walk. From near here we catch the bus back to Otley.
Please bring a packed lunch and adequate refreshments. Many of the fields contain sheep, so no dogs are allowed.
Follow the route of the Bramhope Tunnel
